If left untreated, a cavity can continue to spread and compromise a large area of tooth enamel. When this happens, the cavity might grow too large for your dentist, Dr. Obiora E. Nkwonta, to repair it with a conventional filling. It might need to have all of the tooth enamel replaced by a dental crown to prevent the decay from spreading deep into the tooth.

Your Lake City Way Dental Center dentist will start by examining the tooth to assess the extent of the decay. Then, he will use a drill to remove all of the tooth enamel and form an abutment out of the core of the tooth. This post-like structure will later anchor the crown in your mouth.

A detailed impression will then be cast of the abutment and any other corresponding teeth. This impression will be sent to a dental lab where your new crown will be prepared. A temporary crown will then be secured over the abutment to keep it safe while you await the completion of your crown.

When the dental lab technician has finished your new crown, our Lake City Way Dental Center team will call you in for a brief follow-up appointment. The temporary crown will be removed during this visit and your new crown will be cemented into place.

If you have a tooth suffering from a large cavity, you should not delay in contacting Lake City Way Dental Center at 206.363.1828 to have it treated and repaired with a dental crown in Seattle, Washington.
