What is an occlusal adjustment?
An occlusal adjustment is the reshaping and buffing process that allows us to alleviate the stress and pressure of a misaligned bite. Your bite is the way your teeth relate to one another and how they touch together. There are many ways a bite can become lopsided or crooked. Some examples include:
- Grinding and clenching of your teeth
- Loose or missing teeth
- Shifting teeth
Occlusal adjustment is provided by Dr. Obiora E. Nkwonta, our friendly dentist, to evenly distribute the pressure and stress you place on your teeth when you bite. If left untreated, your teeth can become very worn down and prone to decay. Headaches and sore facial muscles are also common. To adjust your bite, we will use a fine dental drill and filing stone to gently buff away tooth enamel in order to help your teeth align more correctly. This process is easy, quick, and relatively painless. Once the treatment is completed, we may also suggest the use of a night guard to continue to help your teeth touch together properly at night when you sleep.
