What is fluoride?
Your tooth enamel is the hard, outer portion of your tooth’s surface and is considered the hardest substance in the human body. Promoting healthy tooth enamel is a key aspect in helping your smile stay healthy for years to come. Our capable dentist, Dr. Obiora E. Nkwonta, utilizes fluoride in Seattle, Washington to help take care of your tooth enamel. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that most of our patients receive through their water supply and the foods they eat. However, added fluoride treatment is beneficial to all our patients and especially to children.

How does fluoride help teeth?
There are two main ways that fluoride can aid your smile. In children, fluoride bonds with growing tooth enamel to make it stronger and more resistant to decay. Once your tooth enamel stops growing, fluoride becomes a powerful barrier, stopping decay-causing bacteria from remaining on your teeth’s surfaces.

How is fluoride delivered?
Fluoride can be applied directly to your tooth enamel or ingested in tablets or pills. Topical fluoride is the most common and comes in many forms, including gels, varnishes, toothpastes, and mouthwashes. Systemic fluoride, or fluoride in medicine form, is for our patients with a greater need for fluoride treatment. Dr. Obiora E. Nkwonta will be able to work with you to determine what you and your family need. We welcome you to learn more about fluoride by contacting our friendly team at Lake City Way Dental Center today.
